15 Signs You Should Invest In Self Publishing

In January of 2013 I made a very important decision to pursue the publishing of a book that I wrote and illustrated for my daughter.  The book was a tool to help her get rid of her soother - Susy the Soother Fairy. It was a leap of faith, and I watched for all the signs pointing to yes or pointing to no.  I reached out to many different authors and a trail of very successful women who helped me make my final decision. It was a very cool process, and it seemed very natural, nothing was forced.  So I followed the signs.

Here are some of the signs that scream "YES!" self-publish your book!

  1. Your draft is complete, edited and perfect
  2. You have reached out for feedback from family, friends and strangers and results are positive
  3. You understand that there is a lot of Marketing involved, it won't just sell itself
  4. You have sent your book out to agents and publishing houses without any response
  5. You are confident you can commit the time and ground work involved to market the book
  6. You have researched all your options on self-publishing
  7. You have the support of your partner
  8. You have the finances to get you started
  9. You understand that there is a minimum of 6 months to get a book to market
  10. You understand all book requirements - including the need to have an ISBN number
  11. You are positive and proactive
  12. You know who your target market is and where to find them
  13. You are entrepreneurial or at least have some entrepreneurial sense
  14. You are aware that both hard copy and electronic copies sell - and are aware of price differences
  15. You understand that distribution channels like Amazon are not free.

If you are aware of all of these signs, or a lot of these signs and you still have the confidence to self-publish - do it!  If you are unsure because of the list above, do more research and determine whether or
not this is for you.  It is not a walk in the park, but it sure is an adventure!
