The not-so-Secret Tool Every Parent Needs to Help get Rid of that Darn Pacifier

The children’s book, Susy the Soother Fairy, newly released this past December and is quickly becoming the go-to tool for parents who have a child with a serious soother/pacifier attachment. The book, written and illustrated by Laura Page-Hamelin in Oakville, Ontario, features a fairy and a magic sac that helps toddlers get rid of their soother/pacifier attachments once and for all.

Susy the Soother Fairy Comes when you are Three, is targeted at three year olds directly. Three year olds are able to process the information and accept what is about to happen.. The book comes complete with Susy’s magic sac, making the experience very real and successful for young ones.

It was when Laura noticed that her daughter’s teeth were starting to shift from the soother that she was inspired to create a fictional character to assist in the soother weaning in a positive and rewarding way.

"I didn’t want to just take it away. I felt that my daughter was at a stage where I could explain things rationally, and come up with a fun story to help get rid of the soother positively rather than scarring her for life.” Says author/illustrator Laura

Thus a 5-step method for success was invented and is described in the “How it Works” section of her website. It is quite simple in theory. Prepare your child for the handing over of the soothers, replace them with a gift and - voila!- you have a soother free child. Parents also have the option to go online and sign up the child for a personalized letter from Susy as well as download an MP3 version of the official Susy the Soother Fairy song.

“I am not an expert in pacifiers or child psychology, and I know there are arguments supporting both sides of the ‘positive, negative’ soother debate. The only constant factor is that one day, the child will have to give it up. And what an appealing way to say goodbye to a soother – in exchange for a gift” says Laura.

The book is a great tool for success. And since the last three pages are dedicated to reminding children they cannot take their brother or sister’s soothers, it reduces the risk of re-forming the habit all over again.

The books are currently available at www.susythesootherfairy.com, Amazon.ca, Pick of the Crop, and Little Sprout Cuts for Kids (both in Oakville, ON) retailing for $14.50.

LPH Illustrations was founded in early 2013. At the time, Laura Page-Hamelin was a maternity leave mom, home with two little girls, one of whom had a serious soother attachment. This sparked the crea

tion of LPH Illustrations, a children books and related items company, but more specifically, Susy the Soother Fairy.
